Unbedingt probieren!

Stephan Reinhardt in Robert Parker´s THE WINE ADVOCATE: "The Ollersdorfer 2018 Grüner Veltliner Ried Vogelsang comes from a south-facing vineyard on pure calcareous sandstone, and Herbert Zillinger considers this his most exciting vineyard. Intensely golden in color, with perfectly ripe stone fruit aromas on the nose, this is a full-bodied, rich and elegant, pretty generous and juicy yet tight, if not even demanding Veltliner with fine tannins and a powerful yet fine, fresh and salty-herbal finish with oriental seed spices on the aftertaste. Aged on the full lees for one year and bottled without filtration, this wine is a long-distance runner with grip and tension. Try from a big glass, like Zalto's Burgundy or the corresponding new glass from Kurt Zalto manufactured by Josephinenhütte. Bottled with a screwcap and 14% alcohol. Tasted in January 2020.
After 2017, another hot year followed with the 2018 vintage in the Weinviertel north of Vienna. However, in Ebenthal, northeast of Vienna and close to the Slovak Republic, there was a serious difference compared to 2017, as Herbert Zillinger points out: "While in 2017 we had practically no precipitation from May to September, in 2018, we had two noteworthy precipitation events in the form of thundery showers, one with 30 [liters per square meters] and one with 20 l/m². This rain caused a further ripening turbo at the height of summer and brought a completely different wine characteristic compared to 2017." Zillinger started harvesting on 28 August (earlier than ever before) with 20 pickers who started at sunrise to bring in the grapes before the midday heat. "Almost all grapes ripened equally fast, and the conditions were perfectly healthy," Zillinger reports. Thus, the effort of selections was limited." It was rather a battle against the clock to pick the grapes at the optimal physiological ripeness level and without aromas tipping over into over-ripeness." Obviously, team Zillinger did it quite well—the wines aspire to be precise and focused and remarkably well-balanced. In fact, several of his 2018 Grüner Veltliners can compete with the best examples from the Danube." 93+
